Feasibility study for a linguistic intermediary service offering

As part of its objectives to determine the feasibility and viability of the linguistic intermediary service, the SIVET commissioned CBLS to develop an overview of this type of offering. The goal was to determine if the offer was technically feasible, financially viable, and if there were benefits for both the clients and the organization.

All of the activities were carried out with various stakeholders and specialists in the field, including Deaf and hard of hearing people, Deaf and hearing interpreters, as well as managers of interpretation services from other parts of Canada and other countries.

This study of feasibility, based on a qualitative approach, allowed the SIVET to be well aware of the multiple issues related to the provision of a linguistic intermediary service. Based on the results, CBLS was able to propose recommendations, SMART objectives, as well as a pilot project with a budget forecast table for implementation.

This project was the trigger that led to the establishment of a linguistic intermediary service within the SIVET. This service is currently enjoying unprecedented success and will be continued in the regions served. The fruits of CBLS’s work and SIVET’s ongoing efforts can be seen during the press conferences held by the City of Montreal and the Government of Quebec.

Professional development modules for French-LSQ interpreters

The SIVET offers its French-LSQ interpreters numerous development opportunities to help them achieve their skill improvement goals. To that end, CBLS was mandated in 2019-2020 to offer a series of linguistic trainings, focused more specifically on how to use referential space, body representations and rhetorical constructions, which are specific to the langue des signes québécoise (LSQ).

Training modules for linguistic intermediaries

Following the feasibility study on the offer of linguistic intermediary service (More information here, only in French), the the SIVET decided to trust the CBLS team again by giving them the mandate to offer two training modules and workshops for linguistic intermediaries and to develop a skills assessment system.

All of this was developed in consultation with several collaborators and can be used for future cohorts.
